In the Beginning....
McGuire Earth Works began in the late 1970s with a project that would shape its future. Tim McGuire, a teacher and coach, was asked to design a backyard for a wedding. Though he had no formal experience in landscaping, Tim’s creative vision and problem-solving skills led to a design that included block retainer walls, patios, plants, and sod. When the homeowners asked him to install the landscape, Tim partnered with Howard, a skilled mason, and together they successfully completed the project, laying the foundation for what would become a thriving business.
As demand for their services grew, Tim found himself balancing his teaching career with weekend landscaping projects. Working long hours with a dedicated team, which often was composed of his former students, Tim’s passion for landscape design continued to flourish. In 1981, he earned his State Contractor’s License, officially launching McGuire Earth Works Landscaping. By 1986, the company was incorporated as McGuire Earth Works, Inc., positioning itself as a pioneer in sustainable landscaping practices and innovative construction techniques.
Over the years, McGuire Earth Works became known for taking on complex projects, including hillside soil stabilization, drainage systems, and large-scale outdoor living spaces. The company also gained recognition for its innovation, becoming one of the first in California to install inline drip irrigation and earthstone retaining walls. Their work on high-profile projects—like the Northstar Ski Resort—solidified McGuire Earth Works’ reputation for quality craftsmanship. Features in Sunset Magazine and numerous industry accolades further highlighted their impact on the landscaping industry.

Today, McGuire Earth Works, Inc. is proudly led by Tyler McGuire, the son of founder Tim McGuire. With Tyler at the helm, the company builds on more than four decades of expertise, blending tradition with forward-thinking practices.
